First year 1941 model. This is one of the two or three best first year sets I've seen, in amazing near mint condition in its original box. Metal jewels, aluminum speedline filler. Gold filled caps with deep engraved lines, very crisp. Perfect original paint in blue diamond, looking shiny and liquid. Amazingly sharp and crisp all around. The clutch ring still has its gold wash, bright and strong. The pencil has the correct gold wash on the mechanism, and still has its unused eraser inside. Fine point nib. No dents or dings. The only signs of use are some very minor scratches here and there. The imprint is remarkable -- the best first year imprint I've seen. Deep, clear, and with molten edges around the letters. The date code 1 with two dots, indicating production in the second quarter of 1941, is deep and clear. Even the box is pristine, almost perfect. The satin and grosgrain lining is bright and glossy -- one little ink fleck, and two soiled spots under where the writing instruments sit. Initials 'MR' in cartouches. Tested with water, the pen is working. This is probably the original diaphragm, so I did not disturb it. It does fill, but the filler sticks at the bottom of its run and needs to be pulled back out. Faber Castell does a lot of art related tools, and it shows in their high end Graf Von Faber-Castell fountain pen line. This particular beauty is the Guilloche model from that line in Rhodium (think stainless steel, but a bit weightier). The guilloched cross-hatching on the barrel makes for a pleasant grip, while the minutely spring-hinged clip reflects the craftsman engineering put into this pen. This pen has a Fine Nib. Don't have all the boxes etc that it came with, as it moved directly into my felt lined display case. It has been in my regular writer rotation, but is in very good condition. Third quarter of 1945 date code. Wartime vermeil clip -- the gold fill is over silver rather than brass, after brass became a strategic material. Vacumatic filler with plastic plunger. Fine point nib. Very good condition with some wear and signs of use: the cap has two dings, several pinpricks and one noticeable scratch; the hood and blind cap have some vertical scratches from the cap, and there's wear on the bottom tassie. The pen is working with a functioning diaphragm installed, though I got it this way and don't know the age of the diaphragm. Length is about 5 3/8 inches.
